Science, connected worldwide
Project info
Since 1995, the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern has brought together researchers from all over the world to jointly analyse data from space missions. Independent and neutral, it is one of the most important meeting places for the international space and Earth sciences.

The project
Knowledge comes from exchange
ISSI runs no labs of its own and builds no satellites. Its strength lies elsewhere: it invites experts in heliophysics, astrophysics, planetary science and Earth sciences to Bern so they can interpret data from missions such as those of ESA and NASA together. International Teams, Workshops, Working Groups and Fora have produced almost 700 research teams with guests from 63 countries, and thousands of peer-reviewed publications. Many insights into the Sun, the planets and the climate began in Bern.

Together with eyeloveyou (design concept, CI/CD), we had the opportunity to reorganise, modernise and expand the organically grown website. Returning guests should find what they are looking for immediately, and new visitors should understand how ISSI works. Alongside the full navigation in the hamburger menu, quick links lead to the most important sections, and search, directions and the research calendar are always at hand on the right edge of the screen.
The model as a graphic
How knowledge emerges from spaces, people and funding formats is shown by the animated graphic “A Mechanism for Knowledge Generation” on the homepage: dots move in loops on a grid of lines, with the institute’s key figures below in four columns. For each funding format, we designed a separate animation that explains participants, duration, support and outcome at a glance.

The research calendar is integrated directly via the Google Calendar API and shows which teams are currently working in Bern. Teams, workshops and over 240 publications can be filtered and searched, from the current call all the way back to the founding years.
