01

Why a good online shop makes the difference today

Shopping online has long been part of everyday life for your customers, whether on the sofa in the evening or on their phone on the go. The question is no longer whether they buy online, but from whom. And that decision is made in seconds: is the product found quickly, is the price clear, does the checkout work on the phone, is their usual payment method available? Wherever one of these answers is no, the purchase is abandoned, and the order goes to a big marketplace that has solved exactly these points.

Your own online shop gives you back control: over your product range, margin, customer relationships and data. It sells around the clock, including Sundays, public holidays and long after your shop has closed for the day. But only if it’s built properly. A shop that loads slowly, is confusing or squanders trust at checkout costs sales instead of bringing them in. This is exactly where we come in: with a shop that sells instead of administering.

02

What sets an online shop from Fox Computers apart

The path to purchase decides your sales. That’s why we design product pages, search, basket and checkout so customers reach their goal effortlessly, on a phone just as on a desktop. Clear categories, a search that actually finds things, clear product images, understandable prices including shipping, and a checkout with as few steps as possible, even without a customer account. We securely integrate Swiss payment methods such as TWINT, credit card and invoice; suitable shipping options and correct VAT are part of the package.

To make the shop work day to day, we connect it to your processes: stock, accounting, shipping or inventory management, so you never have to enter stock levels and orders twice. After that, you manage products, prices and stock yourself, with no technical knowledge and without having to ask us. We usually build on WooCommerce for WordPress: flexible, extensible and with no licence fee per sale. For special cases with particular requirements, we find the right solution. And we stay on hand whenever you need support or new features.

03

Who an online shop of your own pays off for

An online shop of your own pays off for businesses that sell products and don’t want to depend on marketplaces and their fees. For shops in the Basel region that want to offer their range online too and deliver to regular customers with ease. For manufacturers and retailers who sell across Switzerland and want to reach their customers directly. For companies with products that need explaining, where advice and content make the difference. And for service providers who sell vouchers, courses or accessories.

It also applies if you already have a shop that is slow, doesn’t sell enough, works poorly on mobile or runs on a system that no longer gets updates. Honesty up front matters: if your range and demand can’t yet support a shop of your own, we tell you and suggest a smaller solution, such as an order page or an enquiry button per product. A shop has to sell and pay for itself, not just exist.

04

Typical shop projects

The classic case is a product shop for consumers with a modest to large range: categories, variants such as size or colour, stock levels, shipping and payment. Then there are shops for business customers with login, customer-specific prices and payment by invoice. Subscriptions and recurring deliveries, for example for consumables that customers reorder regularly. Digital products, vouchers and tickets that need no physical shipping. And shops closely tied to a bricks-and-mortar store, with in-store pickup and shared stock.

Often the shop is also part of an existing website that gets extended rather than rebuilt from scratch. Or it starts small, with the most important products, and grows with the business: from a small range to a large catalogue, the foundation stays extensible. We work out together which case fits you. What matters is that the shop reflects the way you sell, not the constraints of a website builder that looks the same for everyone.

05

How your online shop comes together

It starts with a conversation about your range, target audience, payment and shipping methods, the systems you use today and how you sell right now. From that we develop a concept: categories, product structure, checkout flow, integrations and the effort needed for the product data. Then we design the look, and you see early on what the product page and checkout will look like. Only once the concept convinces do we build it, set up payments, shipping zones and VAT, and import the products.

Before launch, we test the entire purchase process: on every device, with every payment method, including confirmation e-mails and invoices. Then we train you or your team in product management and order handling, so you can work independently from day one. After go-live, we support you in operation: updates, support and extensions as your business grows. How long it all takes depends on your range and the integrations; we agree the framework up front.

06

Payments, security and integrations

Trust at the checkout is crucial, because this is where most buyers drop out if something feels insecure. That’s why we integrate payments via established providers, so card details never land on your server. TWINT, credit card, invoice and other common payment methods are all possible, to suit your customers. Encrypted connections, regular updates and clean user permissions in the back end are standard, as is hosting that copes with traffic peaks during promotions without the checkout buckling.

Integrations save you manual work and prevent errors when transferring data. Through interfaces, we sync stock and orders with your inventory management, pass invoices to accounting and generate shipping labels straight from the order. That way the shop runs day to day without you having to enter every order by hand. Anything not yet connected can be added later. We build it so the shop grows with your processes instead of slowing them down.

07

Getting found on Google and in AI answers

The best shop is no use if nobody finds your products, whether via Google or the shop’s own search. That’s why we design product pages, categories and structure for findability from the start: meaningful titles, your own descriptions instead of manufacturer copy, clean URLs and structured product data that Google can read for price, availability and reviews. Fast loading times and mobile display are not only good for customers but also a ranking factor we keep an eye on in every shop.

AI assistants increasingly answer product questions and make purchase recommendations directly, drawing on shops that provide clear and complete information. Understandable product copy, answered questions about delivery, returns, warranty and use, and a logical structure help in both places: in the classic search results and in direct answers. Anyone in the Basel region or across Switzerland searching for your product should end up with you, not on a marketplace or with a competitor who has better content.

08

What an online shop costs

The price depends on your range, features, integrations and the state of your product data. A shop with a few products and standard shipping is a different task from a catalogue with thousands of items, customer pricing and an inventory management integration. So a flat figure would be dishonest before we know your project. What you get is clarity: a transparent quote up front, with no hidden items, and a realistic picture of the running costs for hosting, payment providers and maintenance.

We often start lean and build out. That way you go online early, gather real sales data and decide on that basis which extensions are worth it. Because WooCommerce charges no licence fee per sale, more of your margin stays with you. And we avoid the most expensive mistakes from the start: a checkout that forces registration, hidden shipping costs, missing payment methods and product pages that don’t answer the questions buyers actually have. In a no-obligation first meeting, we show you what framework is realistic.

Questions and answers

How much does an online shop cost in Switzerland?

At Fox Computers, an online shop costs from CHF 10,000, including concept, design, WooCommerce, payment integration, testing and training. The price is mainly determined by the product range, product variants, connections to merchandise management or accounting, and features such as customer accounts, business pricing or subscriptions. On top of the one-off costs come running costs: hosting, a service contract from CHF 1,560 per year and your payment provider’s transaction fees. Because WooCommerce charges no licence fee per sale, more of the margin stays with you. We often start lean with the most important products and expand based on the first sales data.

How long does it take to build an online shop?

At Fox Computers, an online shop is ready to launch from 8 weeks, correspondingly later with many products or connections to merchandise management. Concept, design and build are often done faster than the work around them: preparing product data, creating images and signing the contract with the payment provider. The review by providers such as PostFinance or Worldline in particular can take several weeks. That’s why we recommend submitting the application right at the start of the project. Before go-live, we test the entire buying process with every payment method, including the confirmation e-mail and invoice.

Can customers pay with TWINT and credit card in my online shop?

Yes, Fox Computers integrates TWINT, credit cards, PostFinance and invoice via established providers such as PostFinance Checkout, Saferpay, Payrexx or Stripe. Which provider fits depends on the payment methods you want, the expected turnover and the fees. You sign the contract directly with the provider, and the transaction fees are charged there. Card data never ends up on your server but is processed by the provider, which simplifies security and data protection. In the Höllenhund Gin shop, for example, payments run via Saferpay by Worldline.

WooCommerce or Shopify: which shop software is right?

Fox Computers mostly relies on WooCommerce, because it charges no licence fee per sale and combines shop and website in the same WordPress installation. You manage products, pages and customer information in one place, and all data sits on your own hosting, in Switzerland if you wish. Shopify is a rental system: quick to start, but with monthly fees and less freedom in design and interfaces. For very specific requirements or complex processes, we also develop a custom solution with Laravel. We work out which platform fits based on your product range, budget and processes.

What legal requirements apply to an online shop in Switzerland?

For an online shop in Switzerland, you need a legal notice, a privacy policy under the revFADP, terms and conditions, and clear pricing including VAT and shipping costs. A licence is usually not required; exceptions apply to alcohol, medicines or weapons, for example, which is why the Höllenhund Gin shop includes an age confirmation. From an annual turnover of CHF 100,000, registering for VAT is mandatory. If you sell to the EU, the GDPR and the consumer law of the destination country also apply. Fox Computers implements the technical requirements; the texts of the terms and conditions and privacy policy should be reviewed by a specialist.

Can I sell products with variants such as size, colour or model?

Yes, WooCommerce manages product variants such as size, colour, material or model, each with its own price, image, item number and stock level. Customers choose the combination they want on the product page, and the shop immediately shows the price and availability. Fox Computers implemented this for FASTECH, for example: website and shop with variants, with payment via PostFinance Checkout. With a very large number of combinations, we plan the data structure carefully so management stays clear and the page loads fast. Variants can be imported via CSV instead of creating each one individually.

Can my shop be connected to merchandise management, accounting and shipping?

Yes, Fox Computers connects your shop through interfaces to merchandise management, ERP, accounting or shipping solutions, so stock and orders aren’t entered twice. Typical examples are automatic syncing of stock levels, passing orders and invoices to accounting, and shipping labels straight from the order. The prerequisite is that your system offers an interface or a data export. For many common programs there are ready-made WooCommerce extensions; for others, we develop a custom integration. We assess the effort before quoting, based on your system’s documentation.

How do my products become visible on Google and in AI answers?

Your products become visible when every product page has its own copy, clean URLs and structured product data with price and availability based on Schema.org. Fox Computers builds WooCommerce shops so that Google can read this data and display it in search results. For AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Perplexity, complete information also counts: dimensions, material, use, delivery time, returns and warranty in clear language. Manufacturer texts that appear on a hundred other shops help little. On request, we pass the product catalogue to Google Merchant Center for free product listings.

Can my shop be multilingual and sell abroad?

Yes, a WooCommerce shop from Fox Computers can be multilingual and deliver to customers abroad, for example in German, French, Italian and English. Each language gets its own URLs so Google assigns them correctly. For selling to the EU, we set up shipping zones, delivery costs and, if you wish, a second currency such as the euro. You should clarify customs, VAT in the destination country and returns beforehand with your fiduciary and logistics partner, because this is where most surprises arise. We factor every additional language into the effort from the start.

How many products can a WooCommerce online shop handle?

A WooCommerce shop can handle several thousand products if hosting, database and theme are designed for it from the start. Fox Computers built the shop for the Velonummern Museum, for example, which sells around 6,000 unique items, each with its own product page. What matters for speed is powerful hosting, a lean theme without unnecessary plugins and good filtering and search, so customers find things quickly in large ranges. With tens of thousands of items, complex pricing logic or a very high number of simultaneous orders, we check whether a custom solution with Laravel makes more sense.
